2016! What a memorable year!
There is so much to try to squeeze into this year in review blog post and we could write many pages worth on how eventful 2016 was, but we will do our best to summarize it. We’ve learned what the word entrepreneur truly means. While working on getting our wedding business started we have worked long hours of full time jobs outside of photography while still maintaining our personal lives, albeit, tough, vulnerable and even fearfully ventured at times but so so worth it. We are so looking forward to being full time wedding photographers, it is a bright and shining goal that we are going full steam toward.
Through this busy season we’ve really discovered what we’re made of as a couple, as a team and as individuals, pushing ourselves more than ever before to reach our true potential. We know 2017 will also be a year of growth and learning, well, we’ll be learning forever really, which is good. I hope we never stop learning. Anyhow, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all of the amazing highlights that this year has brought us. As many of you know who have followed the progress of our business, we had been dabbling in wedding photography for just under a decade before finally taking the leap into business ownership. We have gone from just a couple of weddings every year to 10 weddings and 4 engagement shoots in 2016. We are so excited about our growth and can’t wait to see what 2017 brings. We have already booked several weddings for next year that are going to be amazing.
We started out the year with one of the most inspirational events we have ever been a part of, Wedding & Portrait Photographer Industry conference in Las Vegas. There were around 16,000 Photographers there and it felt so good to be a part of something so amazing and meet the mentors we have looked up to and have learned so much from, we left there with more belief in ourselves than we knew was possible and full hearts. There will be more on this later on in a future blog post.
Our first wedding of the year was in beautiful San Diego with our dear friends Trisha & Leon. It was so nice to be next to the ocean again and see all of the sailboats and smell the fresh ocean air. It was a quick trip but before our drive home we were sure to sneak away for a few hours to enjoy Coronado Beach with an ice cream in hand before heading back to the desert for several weddings in our home land. See them here: Jordan & Andrew’s Sky Ranch Wedding , Ashley & Aaron’s Ranch Wedding , Hope & Buster’s Flagstaff wedding, Vanessa & Justin’s Prescott wedding with a view, and Steve & Aaron’s private estate wedding
Our next adventure began in the beginning of June with the arrival of our new car. As many of you know, I am a little bit of an automotive enthusiast so it was an exciting moment for us. It had been a very long 9 month wait since we had special ordered it from Germany. The day after receiving it we set out on a 3000 mile journey to the midwest! We encountered crazy winds in White Sands Monument in New Mexico, dinner atop the tallest building in Austin, a beautiful lakeside wedding where the floods and rainstorms had barely receded, severe thunderstorms in Dallas, countless hours of Priscilla editing on the road while I drove, visited family in Oklahoma, then finally a couple nights in lovely Albuquerque. These are memories that we will treasure forever.
Autumn, our favorite time of year, flew by so quickly! But in a good way, as we had our busiest season yet! We had our first ever double header (back to back weddings, Natalie & McKenzie’s Desert wedding and Mike & Michelle’s Dia de los Muertos wedding) and almost every single weekend was booked with more weddings. Our assistant’s even got married in their unique Flagstaff wedding! We were a part of so many new beginnings and we have been forever changed by all of the love that we have witnessed. During all of these intimate occasions we feel so overwhelmed by the love of these couples and their families. For these brief moments in time we get to be involved in such a loving, and life changing part of a families history. We feel like a part of that family. It is difficult to describe this feeling, even though we may be behind the lens we are experiencing the same emotions of those in front of it. One day I will find the words eloquent enough to portray this feeling better. We just want to say THANK YOU to everyone for the beautiful and vulnerable moments in front of our lens. They are truly life changing to us as well.
To end out our year we were honored to have our photo of our ghost town covered in snow shared by a local TV news station and InstagramAZ. We were coming home from phoenix on Christmas day to discover our little home town had been transformed into a picturesque Christmas Village, the kind of sight that takes your breath away and should be on a postcard or some sort of Thomas Kinkade painting.
So to sum it all up, we’ve been to new places, learned, made mistakes, learned from said mistakes, made new friends, expanded our horizons, tried new food, and got a new car. 2016 was so so great to us! 2017, we can’t wait!
Happy New Year!
